Team Structure

A team consists of the coach, mentor, team commander, and competitors. The coach is the connection between the AFA and the team, mentors are industry experts who kindly offer their time and expertise to help the team better themselves, the team commander is student responsible for well being of the team, and the competitors are the students that actually complete the images. (More info in section 1003 of Season 13 Rulebook)

Mentor - Josh Sokol

Josh began mentoring with the McNeil HS Cyberpatriot team back in the fall of 2017. After two years mentoring that team, he made the move to mentoring the Vista Ridge HS Cyberpatriot team and has been with the team since the fall of 2019.

Josh has a career spanning over two decades in various roles. After spending the early part of his career doing Linux and Unix System Administration, he began a role as the Information Security Program Owner at National Instruments in 2010. His team at NI had 7 full-time employees and encompassed all security at the company. After the end of January 2020, Josh left National Instruments to focus full-time in a role as CEO and CISO at SimpleRisk, a business that Josh created based on an open-source risk management platform he wrote and release in 2013.

Josh is very active with the Vista Ridge HS Cyberpatriot team, meeting weekly, and making himself available to team members whenever needed.
