What is a VM?

A VM in a tool used to run another OS from within your normal desktop environment. Think of it as a mini computer inside your computer.

Setting One Up

  1. Download and install VMware Player
    • Personally I prefer VirtualBox but it is not supported for competition images; it is a bit more complicated to use, google can help you out if you want to use it too - Parker
  2. Get an ISO for the OS of choice
    • Typically you can google "[OS] iso download" and find it, windows can be a bit different, there is a section farther down about that
  3. Choose "Create a New Virtual Machine" in VMware
    • Click "Browse..." in the wizard that pops up, navigate to the downloaded ISO and select that; click next
  4. Fill in "Easy Install" information if applicable
    • Leave the product key blank
    • The name you use does not matter
  5. Click next until you get to finish
    • click finish, the VM should automatically launch

Common Errors

  • VMware error intel vt x disabled
    • Intel VT-x is form of x86 virtualization and needs to be enabled for 64 bit VMs to run
    • Settings to control are in BIOS, here is an ok guide to enable VT-x
  • This host supports AMD-V, but AMD-V is disabled
    • AMD-V is AMD's versions of Intel VT-x, follow the steps listed above
    • (may be marked as IOMMU, SVM, or something else, refer to manufacture resources if you can not find it

Windows 10 ISO

Microsoft has made getting a Windows 10 ISO a bit tricky, but very easy once you know what to do. There are a few options listed below, all work equally well.

Google Drive

  • Download from our Google Drive using this link (recommended)
    • You will probably need to install updates if you go this route, but a total time save over the media creation tool

Media Creation Tool

  • Use the Microsoft Media Creation Tool
    1. Download the tool from that link
    2. Run the tool and accept the terms
    3. Make sure to select "Create installation media"
    4. Hit next until prompted for "Choose which media to use"
    5. Select "ISO file"
    6. Choose an export location and name
    7. Let the tool run

ISO Direct From Microsoft

  • Download an ISO straight from Microsoft's site, you have to do some funny stuff though. (not recommended)
    1. Navigate to this page
    2. Open the Chrome dev tools (F12)
    3. Go to "Network Conditions" in the "console drawer"
    4. Change the User Agent to one of the Mac options
    5. Refresh the page and choose the version of Windows to download
